The benedictine life is both ordinary and human, and extraordinary and divine. It is ordinary and human because St. Benedict in his rule encourages us to get on with the business of monastic life; it is extraordinary and divine because it is a response to a call from God and it is a life lived for others. Welcome to St. Scholastica Priory, a community of sisters located in Petersham, Massachusetts.

June 16, 2008 — The inaugural blog!

This is my first attempt to write a blog for our new web site! The first thing all of us here at the Priory need to do is thank the wonderful benefactor who made this site possible. We cannot thank her enough!

I hope to use this space to talk about our monastic life and it’s very essential role in the world. The Rule of St. Benedict never goes out of fashion and I hope to share some of the ways it can be useful to all people, not just monastics. Announcements about our Oblate program and any other community event will be noted here. I’m not sure I can promise much more than a weekly blog update, but I will try! Please feel free to use the email address provided for any prayer requests you may have, as that is a very important part of our life. The Bishop of our diocese, Most Rev. Robert J. McManus, has asked us to keep the people of our diocese in our prayers and to ask the Lord for vocations to the priesthood and consecrated life.

As most of our friends know, we have been in the midst of a major building project. After we built the guesthouse and the church, we decided to take care of our own needs, and to renovate the existing house and build an addition. We had very little space to use for new vocations and the present house is the antithesis of “handicap accessible.” After many community meetings and a lot of prayer, we started the project.

We had hoped to finish the project this summer, but had to stop as we ran out of money. We are at 72% of completion, with most of the drywall up and paint in some of the rooms. We need your help to finish and enable us to live our life of prayer for the needs of all God’s people.
